Walk Safe Through the Jungle

Walk Safe Through the Jungle

Light dimmed overhead. Around him in the jungle, Paul could hear the sounds of birds and animals—wild animals! Even with a gun for protection, he could not stay here after dark. Paul trotted down the trail, making sure he stayed in its center. Where was the rubber plantation where he had left his car?

Darkness thickened. Animal sounds grew louder. He would never find his way out now! Quickly Paul climbed a large tree. On a high branch he could wait safely for morning.

That night in the forest was only one of the adventures that followed Paul (Hans) Stamer for most of his life. Sometimes he did not welcome adventure. As a city boy, Hans did not want to leave his home in Hamburg, Germany, for an orphanage when his mother died—or live far from the city with new foster parents and a new name, Paul.

At 14 he welcomed the adventure of traveling to the United States to live with his older sister, Maria. But staying with Maria and her husband didn't work out.

How could he find a new boarding house when he could scarcely speak English? That challenge led Paul to a couple who opened their home to him. Other new friends invited him to their church. There Paul received Christ and began the greatest adventure of all—one that eventually led him to the jungles of what is now Indonesia.

As a homeschooling parent, I recommend Walk Safe Through the Jungle by Katharine E. Matchette. I found the story of Paul Stamer to be interesting for my junior high son. His adventures—as an orphan in Germany, a struggling newcomer in America and a missionary in the jungle-were easy to read, and exciting for my son. I would recommend this for all children in grades 4-8.

Paul Stamer is an example of how God works all of life's circumstances for good for those people who follow His call to serve Him. Throughout the tough experiences of Stamer’s life, God shaped a man able to trust Him and serve Him in difficult circumstances. We try to find examples of godliness for our children to follow, and this biography will be enjoyable for your child/student while teaching him or her about a life dedicated to God.
