Discovering Oregon

Oregon-to some it meant free land, a place to build a new and better life for themselves and their children. They came carrying their Bibles and textbooks along with rifles, plows, and household goods. Some came in response to a plea for missionaries. For others, Oregon meant profit-lots of it! They came to trade for furs, and later to seek gold. In their hurry for riches, many abandoned the discipline and principles they had learned in the East. Both groups left their mark on Oregon, but in different ways. Discovering Oregon shows how these differing attitudes affected the events that make Oregon's story.
